How we calculate

Plain maths on public data. Here's every step and source.

The formula

Yearly cost = label kWh per year × electricity rate ($/kWh)
10-year cost = yearly cost × 10

The electricity rate starts at an example 35c/kWh. Change it to the rate on your bill. Longer-term estimates use the same rate throughout; they do not predict future price changes.

The energy label is based on a standard test. Your actual use and costs will vary with the appliance, conditions and your habits. The annual estimates do not include supply charges.

Sources

We use Australian Government Energy Rating registration data available through data.gov.au. The site uses a static snapshot; it changes when the data is refreshed and the site rebuilt.

We omit records without a usable annual energy figure, expired registrations, separately reported compartment figures and models with conflicting active energy figures. This avoids presenting an uncertain figure as a whole-appliance estimate.

Contains data from the Australian Government Energy Rating registration database, licensed CC BY 3.0 AU. Appliwatt is independent and is not affiliated with the Australian Government.
